Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside

These areΒ pictures taken inside one of the living quarters at Birkenau, part of Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland.

The old brick barracks were originally built to hold around 40 people but well over 700 would end up being crammed inside. Up to 5 people were squeezed into each of these wooden three-tiered bunks and, with no heating or insulation in the barracks, this was the only way they could keep warm.

We visited on a cold snowy day and it made the reality seem even more awful.

Although our visit here was a very sombre one, it was also extremely interesting. Everyone should visit Auschwitz; not only out of interest but so that we can all see that something like this should never happen again.

Thank you for sharing these – I agree everyone should see one of the camps for the reasons you mention but for those who cannot your photos help to bring home the horror. An excellent choice for the challenge.

The photos don’t even do it justice. It’s something that really needs to be seen in person to grasp how awful it was. Thank you for the comment πŸ™‚
